چکیده

We investigate bottom-up and top-down deterministic automata on unranked trees. We show that for an appropriate definition of bottom-up deterministic automata it is possible to minimize the number of states efficiently and to obtain a unique canonical representative of the accepted tree language. For top-down deterministic automata it is well known that they are less expressive than the non-deterministic ones. By generalizing a corresponding proof from the theory of ranked tree automata we show that it is decidable whether a given regular language of unranked trees can be recognized by a top-down deterministic automaton. The standard deterministic top-down model is slightly weaker than the model we use, where at each node the automaton can scan the sequence of the labels of its successors before deciding its next move.

Minimizing Tree Automata for Unranked Trees

Automata for unranked trees form a foundation for XML schemas, querying and pattern languages. We study the problem of efficiently minimizing such automata. We start with the unranked tree automata (UTAs) that are standard in database theory, assuming bottomup determinism and that horizontal recursion is represented by deterministic finite automata. We show that minimal UTAs in that class are n...

Finite Automata on Unranked and Unordered DAGs Extented Version

We introduce linear expressions for unrestricted dags (directed acyclic graphs) and finite deterministic and nondeterministic automata operating on them. Those dag automata are a conservative extension of the Tu,u-automata of Courcelle on unranked, unordered trees and forests. Several examples of dag languages acceptable and not acceptable by dag automata and some closure properties are given.

On the minimization of XML Schemas and tree automata for unranked trees

Unranked Tree Automata with Sibling Equalities and Disequalities

We propose an extension of the tree automata with constraints between direct subtrees (Bogaert and Tison, 1992) to unranked trees. Our approach uses MSO-formulas to capture the possibility of comparing unboundedly many direct subtrees. Our main result is that the nonemptiness problem for the deterministic automata, as in the ranked setting, is decidable. Furthermore, we show that the nondetermi...

Bisimulation Minimisation of Weighted Automata on Unranked Trees

Two examples of automata-theoretic models for the validation of xml documents against user-de ned schema are the stepwise unranked tree automaton (suta) and the parallel unranked tree automaton (puta). By adding a weight, taken from some semiring, to every transition we generalise these two qualitative automata models to quantitative models, thereby obtaining weighted stepwise unranked tree aut...
